La Toccata op 7
.
Outlined since 1829, in Heidelberg, the toccata is finished in its first version (in major D) the following year in 1830.

It constitutes the profitable result of the research undertaken on the plan purely pianistic, at the time of the composition of Studies Op 3 after the whims of Paganini.

Revised in 1832, whereas Schumann continues its theoretical studies in Leipzig, it takes its final form in 1832.
While adopting the traditional sonata form, Schumann successful perfect balance between the strict writing of the toccatas bequeathed by Bach, and seeks it of a poetic and romantic expression.

Schumann is infinitely surprised when, persuaded to have composed the most difficult work ever written for the piano, his young friend virtuoso Ludwig Schunke, the toccata with brilliance without another preparation interpreted to him.

Schumann dedicated work to him !
The composer wished to see playing his work, legato, but much of pianists preferred the pageantry with the authenticity.

After this frenzy of double eighth notes, Schumann surprises us by finishing sound work by a rate of some played agreements “piano”, as if all its energy had been absorbed by the difficulty of the part.

Place at rest!
