la musique romantique
.
.
The Romanticism appears at the end of XVIIIme century, but it is XIXme century which will see to achieve a true revolution in the field of art, and not only in music.
The literary romanticism gains little by little all Europe. In France, the romanticism announced by Rousseau, begins in 1820, with Lamartine, then Chateaubriand and Victor Hugo.

In painting it is Eugene Delacroix who has the appearance of a precursor, but Claude Monet goes beyond in the technique. It innovates, in the style, its pallet is softer, its broader key and strongly coloured contrasts. It will be with Manet, at the origin of the impressionist movement.

In Germany it is Goethe which will inspire the first romantic ones.
It is in Germany that the musical romanticism will be strongest. The composers follow one another and each one brings something again.

.

Berlioz
.
Berlioz is born with the Dimension St Andre, close to Grenoble. It goes up to Paris in 1821, to make there studies of medicine which it forsakes very quickly, with the profit of the music.
In 1830 it obtains the Grand Prix of Rome.

Of return in France, he marries the English actor Harriett Smithson. In 1842 it starts a round in Germany, then in Austria, and Russia. Twice widowed, it also loses his son and undertakes a new voyage in Russia.

After an agitated life, he dies in Paris in 1869. Its work is the reflection of its life and its personality. One will retain especially the Fantastic Symphony, the Damnation of Faust, Harold in Italy, as well as an Op3era Comique “Beatrice and Benedicte”.

What one will call the generation of 1810 will see being born several composers from very first order.

.

Mendelssohn

.

Mendelssohn (1809-1847) is a complete musician. Pianist, leader and composer. It gives its first public concert in 1818.
In 1820 it meets Weber, and in 1821 Goethe. To this time goes back its first compositions which S `connect at accelerated intervals.

In 1835 it takes the direction of Gewandhaus of Leipzig. It binds friendship with Schumann and receives Chopin. It founds an academy in Leipzig in 1847, making this city an artistic center. He writes 5 Symphonies, of works for piano, a concerto for violin which is today, one of works for violin and orchestra, the most played.

 .

Schumann (1810-1856) is at the same time musician, writer, critical musical. Following an accident pianistic, it must give up the career of virtuoso, and is devoted to the composition. He writes exaltées and tormented symphonies, of which splendid Rhénane.

Its marriage with Clara then the birth of his children will bring happiness to him. Towards the end of its life, the madness gains it. It is thrown in the Rhine in 1854.
Fished out by boatmen, it is interned in an asylum close to Bonn, where it will finish its life.

   Chopin.

Chopin (1810-1849) Polish by his mother is born in Warsaw. In 1828 he undertakes a round with a required passage by Vienna. To this time its 2 concertos for piano go back.

He will write then, almost only for the piano, of true chiefs of works, top of the romanticism pianistic, the night ones, studies, impromptus, Polish, waltz.

On the other hand feeling more with narrow in the sonata form it does not arrive at the same degree of romanticism.

But it is in my opinion its 4 ballades and the preludes which are the expression even of its genius.
Before and after him, few composers for piano reached this level, this richness, this love that Chopin gave through these pianistic works.

.

Liszt

.

Franz Liszt (1811-1886), any young person in Vienna, is made understand by Beethoven then goes to Paris. It gives concerts, hears Paganini, and acquires a large celebrity.

Her second Cosima daughter will be later the woman of Wagner.
In 1847 it settles in Weimar where there will remain 15 years. It is its creative period richest. In 1861 he travels, initially in Rome, and in 1865 he gives up his career of virtuoso to devote itself to the composition and professorship. He dies in Bayreuth in 1886.

One would be tempted to compare Liszt and Chopin so much they are both of the pianists out of the commun run, but works all of Liszt are in virtuosity, and of a technique transcendantale. Its two concertos are monuments of the kind, at the same time romantic, powerful, imposing.

If my preference goes to Chopin because he addresses himself directly in the middle, Liszt exceeds it in its Symphoniques works.

.

Brahms

Born in 1833 Brahms is a purely romantic composer, and although the major part of its life is in second half of XIXme century, it is not characterized by boldness from its musical language.
It is not a musician for purpose.
One will compare Brahms with Beethoven, showing it even to copy his famous elder. All this is exaggerated, but a little like Rachmaninov, for other reasons, Brahms will not seek to dazzle by the innovation.

This is undoubtedly due to the fact, that Brahms is originating in the North of Germany, which does not constitute, like Vienna, a crossroads of the artistic thought.

Nevertheless its 4 symphonies are a pure wonder. They were written rather tardily like all its Symphoniques works, if one excludes the first concerto for piano writes in 1858 pennies the friendly pressure of Schumann.

The first symphony goes back to 1875, and its last of 1885, they are works of maturity. Its concerto for violin attracts the virtuosos always as much, just like its 2 concertos for piano. He dies in Vienna in 1897.

.

Dvorãk

.

Dvorãk, Czech composer, were born in 1841. In 1862 it obtains a place of altist in the national orchestra founded by Smetana (1824-1884)
In 1873 it leaves the opera and goes to Vienna where it meets Brahms. In 1879 it is in London, where it will turn over 9 times and where it will write its seventh symphony in 1885. In 1890 it creates its eighth symphony in Prague.
From 1892 to 1895, he travels to America where he goes to direct the academy of New York.

He dies in Prague in 1904.

        It there be so much some work romantic to illustrate this page, that I have choose Dvorãk because this passage of ninth symphony be very known, and that it go back to 1893; one will be able to compare this extract, with the selected extract in order to illustrate the romantic modern ones, the fifth of G. Mahler which goes back to 1903;

Only 10 years separate them and which difference between two works.

Symphonie du nouveau monde uniquement sur le Cd-Rom du site

You will undoubtedly have noticed that I spoke little about opera, but it is not a chance, because since Mozart, and if one excludes the “Fidélio” of Beethoven only the Italians, or almost, remain attached to the kind.

In decline at the end of XVIIIme century, it will be necessary to await Rossini (1792-1868) so that the Italian opera takes again its take-off. It will be then Bellini (1801-1835) and Donizetti (1797-1848)
